I recently completed a diy CNC plasma system initially using servo motors.
The plasma cutter however gave so much high voltage noise that I converted to stepper.
Make sure you use a good plasma cutter
Hypertherm, or Lincoln or Miller.
Chinese units, although they cut good, they emit too much electromagnetic noise that it affects the circuits

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] DIY plasma cnc
Most of the posts in this group are about machining/routing, which I'm interested in, but I am also in need of a CNC plasma cutter. I recently got access to a PLASMACAM (servo motor, rack and pinion drive, but nothing special for machine travel - the X and Y were on formed mild steel). So I'm thinking I could put together a 30" by maybe 4 ft unit that would do 90% of what we need.
I'm thinking maybe a long cog belt drive with steppers, since speeds can be pretty quick... I cut 1/2" steel plate at 30 inches per minute, and rapids of 100...
Has anyone here built their own or assembled a kit and have feedback?
Does MACH work to control plasmas?
Thanks guys,
Chuck
