I have no problem with my better half's support. Anytime I buy
anything, she simply goes out and spends twice that much on clothes !

Means I have to triple the price of anything I want !

Finally had enough .. put my foot down and had a heated, one-sided
lecture about the difference between the two purchases.

Look, you're going to wear that sweater ONCE, then put it in a drawer
for twenty years, and finally give it away to the thrift store.

I'm going to use my tools today, tomorrow, next week, next year, and
right up to the day I die. They'll be useful for the next 50 years,
and when I finally DO kick off, you can sell them for good money.
There's a lot of money to be had selling tools at an estate sale !

Dinner came an hour later, but when she put my plate down in front of
me, I wasn't sure I was hungry any more ...
