All of this sounds familiar. I still have an RCA transmitting tube manual and a Sylvania receiving tube manual tucked away. While
on fire lookout one summer ( 50's) I rebuilt the 6L6 final on a CW transmitter with a soldering iron that went in the cook stove.
Power supply for the xmitter was Briggs and Stratton driving a auto generator -> a couple of auto batteries -> vibrator. Ugh.
