Compuserve almost has what you want, the forums there are remarkable for
their lack of spam and advertising, it's stomped on rather quickly by
forum leaders. Using an offline reader like like Ozwin makes it almost
as fast as retrieving email. Unfortunately, users have abandoned CIS in
droves and those forums that survive are mere shells of what they were a
few years ago. Also, access is not nearly as universal and not quite as
convenient as internet email.
As a co-founder of the metalworking section of the Handcrafts Forum,
it's been disappointing to see posts fall to maybe 2-3/month.
Been with CIS 13 years, but I suppose I'm going to give up as well
sooner or later.

Ah, what we're willing to pay for "free" stuff....
