VERT MILL CONVERSION

What is the preferrable method for stepper motor physical connection.
On older commerical CNC mill setups that I have looked at, the
stepper motors were mounted inline with the ball screws and drove
them thru a coupler. Rotation was 0.200" per rev and the motors were
typical at 200 steps per rev. So it was getting 0.001" per full step.

In HMS articles I have seen used off axis motor installation, and the
belt ratio providing torque gain and finer steps. This physical
arrangement provided for manual access that the inline motors had
lacked.

I hate loosing manual use of ther machine. Any comments on using
double shafted motors to allow manual hand wheel operation? Do the
conversions performed by members on this board allow for manual
operation?

I have a Millrite vert mill. What would be the acceptable range (min
& max) for stepper motor torque in the X and Y axis? What about the
Z axis, does it typically use the same motor size & torque??

Thanks, Stan K
