Retro-tek?

[We just salvaged three large motors and a control box marked "Retro-Tek
88" from a circa 1988 Bridgeport-clone conversion- the owner decided to
turn it back into a manual machine. The motors have just about no
information on them, but looking inside, I see 4 wires: black, red, white,
and green, which seem like just enough to run the motor forwards or
backwards. I can't see any way to change brushes, and there don't seem to
be any encoder wires connected at all. The control box seems to house a
standard servo control, with amps for each axis. Does anybody know anything
about these retrofit kits? I am guessing that these are brushless DC motors
and that the encoders must have been mounted on the ball-screws (which
remain on the machine) but I'm not sure how useful any of this stuff might
be for running a CNC router, which is what I had in mind (using the Gecko
drives.). Any information or leads would be appreciated.]
