Andrew,

If as we suspect, you have a stepper system, you are out of luck as far
as running encoders for feedback, unless you want to experiment with the
DeskNC version that has been setup for encoders.
Are you going to try to run the original control? If you're just using
the drivers, you will need to determine where the step and direction
lines are input.
The mill I bought, with an Innovator control, had the drivers in a large
cabinet, and each motor had two cards as part of it's driver, they mated
to a backplane assy. I decided at that point to try to get some $$ off
the price and leave it behind as I didn't have time to mess around with
trying to figure out how to interface this backplane assy.
I also didn't have the floor space for the cabinet, though I could have
easily put my Ahha computer, screen, and racks for tool holders in the
cabinet, there being lots of open space inside.
