The Bridgeport stepper power supplies are driven
by a three phase transformer. Each phase of the
transformer drives one axis. the AC output of the
transformer is 65 to 70 Volts AC. Each axis has
its own bridge rectifier. that means there is a
potential of 90 to 98 Volts DC. The actual
voltage to the motor is controlled by a "Saturable
Reactor". (A transformer that has the output
controlled by feeding DC to it and saturating the
magnetic field). The net effect is a very
controlled motor amperage at the cost of a lot of
waste power.
