The isolation transformers come in handy if you are ever working on
a piece of electrical equipment with test gear, like an oscilloscope.
If there is a grounding issue or hot chassis it will save your test
equipment from potentially severe damage. They also can be used to
step-up or down line voltage if they have the taps.
New, in the size your describing, they can be $600+, but I got one
used about the same size for $50 which was a deal.
