Hi John, and welcome,
Remember, we're ALL newbies at SOMETHING! Please don't be intimidated
by the list. You may have joined while we were/are talking about
something heavy. Rest assured, there's a lot of lighter stuff here.
Be sure to look thru the past posts and use the search to look for
YOUR interests.
It happens that the list owner, Bill, is a lathe guy too! Retro-fit
of your lathe is VERY valid, and now that you have shared what you're
trying to do, you may find help coming your way.
A lot of the programs we use STILL don't have "little pictures" on
the screen. With your Pascal and BASIC background, you may want to do
a search on "Luberth plotter". This is a site devoted to home-built
plotters and some cnc type machines. Luberth is in the Netherlands,
and began programming in Pascal. Source code is available. Then he
went to BASIC. More source code. Now he is using C++ and others have
joined his passion.
Also take a look at Stepster, originally written by Kevin Carroll, and
currently being(somewhat) maintained and updated by Charlie Gallo,
who is a member of this list. Full source, and free, written in a
shall we say, "older" style of programming. Do you like spaghetti?
:-)
Glad you're here!
