Yes, I have used a unibit the way you describe. Works ok if accuracy
is not too important.
The rest of your message is an interesting take on a "reverse" CMM.
Why don't you "Kludge" one out and tell us how it goes? Even 2 axis
(without the "tilt" option) would be interesting.
You could call it the "shroud of knowledge" or "cone of perception"
