To answer you question about the ball screw, you don't use a 3/4" ball screw
for a 10' length you use more like 1 to 1- 1/4 inch diameter for that
distance plus keep in mind that your following nut will give some support
even tho it is travelling along the screw. There are many CNC machines out
there with that configuration a lot of the CNC routers used in the
woodworking industry are 5' X 10' travel and use the no backlash ball screws.
However, in your case if you only need +/-.060 tolerance you should have NO
problem using a timing belt for that. You should achieve far better than
that even with a timing belt and it would be far less expensive than any lead
screw assembly you could buy for that distance and you are correct about
being able to compensate in software for most errors.
