Wire EDM Backing Up

This is going back 15 years or so, but the way i remember it is i
used to watch the wire EDM were i worked backup and go forward
whenever the wire shorted out. It would sit there and do this
forever if it did not start to burn again. I could see this by
watching the front panel position readout. The EDM would get itself
in this position when the slug fell out and got wedged between the
wire and the block of steel.

Also i remember someone patented the backup procedure when the wire
shorted out. And the other manufactures had to find other ways
around this. One methode was to move the wire out on an angle away
from what was being burned. This was a big deal at the time because
the math was complicated for the simple controlors.
