Dave,

I'm still thinking piezio. Buy a cheap 1 or 2 inch tavel indicator
(for the tip threads, so we can use std. probe tips) Set up a
vibration (thin wire between the probe tip and crystal) and "watch"
for the freq. change. Schmitt trigger to TTL. output to a "skip"
function (G31,in a HAAS control). Use a macro to read current
position to a file. done. Bad: no overtravel!

Or:

Like the Picza. Thin wire IS the probe. set vibrating. else as
before. Bad: pokes holes in model! bent wire "skews" readings. Good:
Cheap. replaceable wire. small. SIMPLE. Should be pretty precise.

Maybe "beads" for the end of the wire corresponding to ball mills?
A "collet" (think pin vise) for different size wires. Since we're
looking for a freq. SHIFT; could we just "lock" to the init freq?
(because the wire is thicker/thinner/longer/shorter/beaded?)
