Smoke,

Wow! Somebody needs to talk to your instructor, and FAST! We have
enough problems in CNC without this! I am sure you will hear from
others that there most definately is a Z axis on a lathe! The two
primary axes are XZ. Y is tool height. You can easily check this out
for yourself by calling ANY CNC LATHE manufacturer and asking!

>This is definitely NOT true! Over at the local college where I
>learned CNC programming, the Z axis on a lathe DOES NOT EXIST! The
>cutting tool operates on the Y axis.

>I also learned that normally:
>A axis rotates about the X axis,
>B axis rotates about the Y axis,
>C axis rotates about the Z axis,

If "about" means around, then yes, this is correct.

<snipped correct description of R,P,Y.>

>Speaking of a 3 axis (XYZ) milling machine then, Pitch would be axis
>B, yaw would be axis C and roll would be axis A.

Correct.

>Actual "Pitch" and "Yaw" can be obtained as follows:
>Mount a rotary table FLAT on the mill table <s>to provide the
>"yaw" axis.
>Mount another rotary table in a vertical position on top of the
>first rotary table. This will provide the "pitch" axis.

Correct. I added the word FLAT for clarity, and deleted the lathe
reference. 5 axis machines are usually xyzab, and the "rotary tables"
are incorporated into the spindle structure. There is also a large 5
axis horizontal mill where the B axis is achieved by rotation of the
ENTIRE table!

>Hope this helps....but, from the responses I've seen, it probably
>won't.Smoke

If we can get some CNC books to that instructor, it WILL help!
