Old DOS & DRO's

I was just using the OS that came on the old machines. I have a variety of
286's and 386's that I plan on using to add modest DRO capability to most
everything in the shop. Maybe even the only shaper with a DRO in existance!
Anyway, I don't have a set of discs for loading a new OS on these old
beasts. Is there a operating system that will work with this old stuff that
is better than just using what it came with? Preferably that is free, like
the machines themselves, and the software for the DRO.
