Joe,
Forward Air is the one. My notes are a mess, I think this is their 800
number, 800-533-9517.
The conditions are that they do not pick up nor deliver. You must take
to their nearest terminal or arrange other shipping to the terminal, and
it must be picked up at the other end or arrangements made for a freight
forwarder to pick up and deliver. One-time shipments are paid up front
in cash or money order. Set up an account if you have time to arrange
it, else you will need to get a money order to the originating terminal
before they will ship.
They are very helpful and will gladly assist in locating the closest
terminals to the desired source and destination, as well as offer
suggestions for short haul trucking at either end if you need.
I needed to get my mill head to the Atlanta terminal, and they supplied
numbers for three outfits. One quoted over $250 on the approx 100 mile
delivery from Dalton. One of the other three suggested a fourth outfit
that specialized in this sort of short haul trucking and ran this route
daily. Cost me $58 to have it picked up and delivered, $10 of that was
for filling out the air bill.
Forward Air charged me $87.61 + $10.41 insurance on $1600 to ship to
Sacramento. Their warehouse was actually closer than the Consolodated
Freight terminal, and they happily loaded the crate onto my truck with
no hassles or dock/forklift fees.
All in all, saved about $300, well worth the couple hours of extra
hassle setting everything up and getting money orders for everyone.
