In Praise of Series 1

The big Bridgeport series 1 is back from the dead!! It runs
flawlessly at 30 ipm with 1990 anaheim unipolar drivers. I am still
running tests, but so far I am very pleased. I am also very happy
with CNCPro as the control.
Here are some points of interest.
1. The lower the feed, the louder the motor. At very low feedrates
(<10ipm) the motors are LOUD and vibrate too much. I am hoping my
2001 upgrade to Gecko microstepping drives will fix this.
2. Anyone doing a series 1 salvage, make SURE you keep the number
lables off the wires that you clip. The bridegeport wiring diagrams
have corresponding numbers and it was VERY easy to get the
spindle/brake/speed control back up and running. You need the motor
barrel switch, the 240/120 transformer and the 24VDC power supply.
I am still learning ACEConvert, so I haven't done anything too
complicated yet.
I recommend a Series 1 to anyone looking for a retrofit (just remember
the smaller envelope, 12 x 18)
