I'm posting this for one of my customers here in Grass Valley, Calif.
They have a Wells Index 3 axis CNC knee mill with Heidenhein control for
sale. I don't recall the control model number, but this is a full-on
servo machine. Spindle is NMTB 30 taper and there are a number of
holders. I believe there is also a PC included with a CAM program, all
setup to download to the control.
The control is attached to the base at the right front corner and swings
through about a 90 degree arc. Takes up some floor space...
Head is VS. Spindle was recently rebuilt.
I looked at this machine myself, asking price at the time was $7500.
I offered $5k, didn't get it. (this was about 6 months ago)
I felt the head was a bit noisy, probably bushings in the VS pulleys,
maybe the drive belt as well. Also, I felt the X and Y axis' were rather
noisy. In talking with a Wells Index tech, I was told that 99% of the
time this is caused by brush wear and the resultant dirt finding it's
way into the resolvers. Most of the time taking the motors apart and
cleaning everything will fix it. Rebuilt servo motors are around
$700/exchange. My recollection is that the ways are in VG condition.
Machine made good parts when last run. I feel it does need some work,
but is capable of making parts right now.
I've been thinking all afternoon about this machine for myself. However
I really don't care for the control and don't have the time to mess with
trying to convert to EMC, nor do I have the space for it.
Current asking price is $4000. For someone wanting to start up some side
commercial work, this could be a great start. If anyone is interested,
call 530-477-9777 and ask for Glenn Ward.
Buyer would be expected to either pick up or make arrangements for
shipping. Grass Valley is about 50 miles north of Sacramento.
I have no stake in the sale of this machine, other than maybe a brownie
point or two if I help find a buyer.
