the knee already has lots of weight pre-loading it in the downward
direction. I know that a drive motor on the knee would be much more
massive than one on the quill for this reason, but it seems that it would
be much more accurate. A friend who did a CNC retrofit did the Z travel on
the quill, and used his old X axis power feed on the knee to move it up and
down easily, so a fairly managable stepper or servo must be able to move it.
