Not necessarily a safe assumption. In general, a motor with an encoder
has a good chance of being a decent motor, but its qualities for servo
position control of machine tools may not be a good match.
For machine positioning applications a motor with minimal torque
ripple and velocity ripple, as well as high torque at low speeds is the
recipe. A motor that has peak output at 5000 - 10000 RPM will not fill
the bill without a high reduction ratio. A motor with peak output around
1000 - 2000 RPM is much better, and will drive a machine tool with
a low belt reduction ratio, or even direct drive.
