I'm afraid to say that cheapest and good enough are a contradiction when
talking digital cameras.

The minimum you would want is a 1.3 megapixel, and that is really
subminimum today. I have an Olympus D400z which I like as a camera but do
wish had better resolution. You are looking at the $400 to $600 price
range to get something that will remain useable and _useful_ for several years.

On the plus side, once you start using one, you will kick yourself for not
having bought one earlier. I have a number of very good Minolta film
cameras, which are now essentially gathering dust since I got the Olympus.
While the image resolution is of course much lower than that of a film
camera, IMHO, it more than compensates in the area of exposure latitude and
elimination of exposure factor and color factor problems inherent in silver
based films. Simply put, I have gotten excellently exposed photos with the
Olympus in doors in cavernous poorly lit buildings at the Smithsonian
storage facility that would have been mostly black, even with flash (and
about 10X the weight of equipment) with my Minoltas
