you can probably find machines using just about anything
we have an older Omniturn retrofit kit (1994 came with a 386-20 control)
on a Hardinge turret lathe that used helical couplers on the direct drive
X&Z slides ,the Z coupler broke under waranty and was replaced with
the riveted disk type servo coupling the X axis coupling is still original
considering the hours weve put on this machine weve had very few
problems with it
the most lathes I've seen are belt coupled , you run into another set of
problems with belts so I'd say go with what will best fit on your design
