WOW guys (and gals if any) it must be the weekend of Linux. I was getting
worried that youall would buy up every copy of 5.2 so I ran off to Fry's
in SanJose and went a searching. and guess what, one of you missed a copy
cause I found one. HA, gotcha. So mine is "RedHat Linux Unleashed - third ed"
the book is by SAMS and proports to have Linux 5.2 on the CD, as well
as detailed instructions on installing linux, Xwindows and a host of other
"great" things including 1000 other tools. (Like I have time or the smarts to figure
all that out.) This little book is 1000+ pages, that should put me to sleep.
So, a couple of "let's see if I can stay out of trouble kinda" questions. First, has
anyone used this specific version from this publisher? Any opinion on the Tome
itself, i.e. easy to read, don't believe a word those guys say, etc.? How would I verify
the kernel version or an I assured to have the correct kernel if I have the 5.2
version. I don't have a "spare" PC (I just got a new P3-550 with all the highend stuff
and gave my old one back to my company), SO, could someone suggest an off
the shelf system I can buy that has the Linux-happy hardware in it. This is a case
where convenience is more important than saving a couple of $$$. I'd rather be
testing this on my Shoptask and homegrown large format gantry routing system
that I building. I'm somewhat heading for new ground in that I'm looking to provide
a 4th axis (rotary table) to the fray. BTW I got DanM's driver and Dro kits as well
as 4 of the steppers he was offering, so I'm itching to make some chips. Any hints
on getting from kits to chips would be appreciated. I have been a lurking for the
last 30 days or so, so I have gotten some sense of the challenge and a few of the
tricks from the great support youall have given the folks that have gone before me.
well --- thanks in advance
