Sounds like you made good progress, but consider before you try to
make any changes to the OEM setup.
Angular contact bearing pairs are "real" thrust bearings.
They give you close to a 50/50 thrust/radial load capacity. Properly
installed and preloaded they will have zero backlash and no noise.
Most front wheel drive cars use angular contact pairs which handle
lots of thrust and radial load for many years.
Worst case would be to replace the bearings with a new set of the
same, I wouldn't make any changes to the original bridgeport setup.
