Here is a posting from the Shoptask (crummie 3 in 1) forum. Thought it would
be of interest to members of this list.

Lube Oils for reference
Since I have worked in industrial lubrication for 30 years for Mobil, I
can most likely provide some direction regarding lubrication.
An SAE 10 non-detergent industrial circulating oil would be Mobil DTE
Light (an ISO 32 VG oil). This oil would usually go in the headstock of
the typical machine tool.
An SAE 10 (an ISO 32 VG) anti-wear hydraulic oil would be Mobil DTE 24 or
Mobil Hydraulic Oil 32 AW. Either of these products can be used as a
headstock oil, but will run right off of leadscrews or ways.
An SAE 20 (ISO 68 VG) way oil would be Mobil Vactra #2, except that a few
years ago this product was reformulated to make it more compatible with
soluble coolants (they took out the Paratac). Paratac is what makes way
oil very sticky and stringy. Anyway, another Mobil product still has the
Paratac in it...it is called Mobil Vacuoline 1409, and I recommend that
this product be used for lead screws, ways, gibs, etc. It also makes a
good chainsaw bar oil in summer, but flows a little too slowly in winter
for chainsaws.
Mobil Velocite 10 is an ISO 22 VG (lighter than an SAE 10) spindle oil,
normally used in higher speed grinder spindle bearings.
Automatic Transmission Fluid is usually an ISO 46 VG (between SAE 10 and
SAE 20)and will work well as a circulating oil in the headstock, but will
quickly run off of leadscrews and ways. If you are washing your shop rags
in the family washer, the red dye can be expected to turn everything in
the load a "pink" color.
I am not trying to sell Mobil products, but these lubes are available from
your local Mobil distributor (check the yellow pages)...unfortunately, a
5-gal can is the usual minimum size. Grainger and MSC have smaller
package sizes of all these products. All major oil companies have
"equivalents" to these products, in case you have another
favorite oil company.
