One other option is to get a 1 HP VFD. Some are rated for single phase
220 V input, but a 1 Hp model should run a drill press just fine even if it is
not rated for single phase input. I have been using a 1 Hp 3-phase-only
VFD on my 1 Hp Bridgeport mill for 2 years with excellent results. Look on
eBay for VFD units. I got the Magnetek GPD333, and am very happy
with it.

A 1200 RPM frame 72 motor can be had, but it may be either hard to
find or more expensive than a VFD.
