Peter,
We've talked about this in the past. A search of the archive should
give you a start. Short answer is:
There's more than one or two companies who do this successfully,
although I don't care for the approach. Supercam has a XXYZ system
which is mis-labelled xyyz. Many of these are rack/pinion drive and
use 3:1 or 4:1 drives to get the resolution up.
You'll need to AND the homes' together. Or use one side only. (the
control, as you say, doesn't know there are two motors). Doesn't need
to!

P.S. The minirobo will work fine with "other than supercam" software.
P.P.S. Vector is a CAD/CAM program, NOT a machine controller.(yet?)
