Hi Peter,
I think CAD/CAM is just a tool, a better way do do something. I suspect
we are "drawn" to it because we are already fascinated with mechanical
and electronics, and have a desire to "create". I drew mechanical and
electronic plans before I even took a mechanical drawing course. And I
used a electric drill, hacksaw and files to make parts before I ever got
to use a lather or mill. These inventions like CAD/CAM (and lathes and
mills) only take us further! One could also extend this to computer
languages. I dreamed of how I could track amateur radio satellites in
orbit with mechanical systems when I was in high school and college, now
I have written software that can do it, not JUST the tracking part, but
the orbits and graphics too!
Just my thoughts, since you asked!
