EMC BOX

I saw the "Internet appliance" on thelinuxstore.com web
site. I was looking into building a box like that to sell to
EMC People except with a few more features. But I have problems
buying parts cheap enough to get good prices. The best I could
do is get the parts for a K6-2 300Mhz system down to about
$500. If I added postage, and a bit of my time ( say $50-$60)
to assemble, test, install redhat 5.2, rtlinux, KDE, Modem, LAN,
ETC I came up with $600-$650.

thelinuxstore.com sells a similar system for $533 + shipping
($477 + $56 for network card).
So I end up being $50- $100 more expensive. If I could buy
in volume I could make up some of that. but with "only "
200 people on this list and I'm sure not everyone would
want to buy one, I can't build enough volume to get better
prices.

SOOOOO I like the idea of getting them to configure a system
for 5.2 redhat and we just use Tim's scripts to upgrade it.
Then users will just buy the "standard 5.2 box" and apply
Tim's scripts and off they go. Hopfully the system will
have all the "hard" linux stuff like video, network, and
modem stuff running. The only issue is if they have set up
the system so it can recompile the kernel ITSELF. I fear
that on these "shrink wrap" boxes that they may not want
users to recompile the kernel, so they take the source and
other stuff out.

How about a straw pole as to how many would want to buy
one from thelinuxstore.... send me email and in a week
or two I will report back the number of "buyers" and see
if they would be interested.

To see the proposed system go to :
http://thelinuxstore.com

then choose the "ion" system. This is the closest to
what we need. The "pia" system needs too much extra stuff.

P.S -- I'll buy one...If several others will...
