Mega-resolution!

Got a job coming up again that I'd previously turned in my Clausing
using the MaxNC bolted to the ways. With it going on eBay in the next
day or two, I have to scramble for a replacement or lose the job.
I've got some nice linear components all set up, but with 10mm pitch
ball screws. I can't get a pulley combo that will convert the metric
pitch to an even number of steps per inch.
Was wondering just what to do about this when I spotted the harmonic
gear reducer sitting on my shelf. Took it down and counted out the input
turns to make one output. 80:1 with zero backlash. Using full stepping
at the motor, that gets me .000024" travel per step at the slide!
It's unfortunate that I will have to degrade this accuracy potential a
millionths by belting the setup to the screw, just don't have the room
to mount things inline. It's probably not going to turn any heads on
rapids, but I ought to be able to hold my tolerances on diameter!
