I have a ground level door in the basement - one of the specs I gave the
realtor when we were looking to move. But, it requires backing a truck
down a mild grade in the back yard. It was no problem backing a 20 foot
liftgate truck down there and unloading my round ram Bridgeport and
the 10" Atlas I had at the time. The lathe was just carried, and the
mill was rocked and pushed on a piece of 3/4" plywood. I took the
threshold out of the doorway and matched the grade with shims under
the plywood. It was no biggie. But, that just won't work with a
9000 Lb lathe! I'd have to make a set of truly massive dollies, and
I don't think a lift gate would handle 9000 Lbs, but maybe they would.
Since a guy at our shop lost his leg to a 7000 Lb or so lathe, I've
gotten a bit more cautious about moving top-heavy machinery.
