From a user's standpoint, I don't think much of potted systems either. If
something fails, we do not have the option of trying to fix the problem
ourselves, but are forced to return the item to the manufacturer. As far as
reverse engineering - Yes, maybe as a hobbiest I might look at the circuit
and cobble up something for home. As a professional building a system for
use in a manufacturing plant - NO WAY. I'll stick with buying a unit and
sticking the manufacturer (or reseller) with the maintenance headache.

To this day I hate potting. It is hard enough to design and maintain
a design without the added impediment of being blindfolded and having
your hands tied behind your back. I blame potting for my gray hair.
