Joystick input for EMC

I wonder if a trackball wouldn't be a better input device than a joystick?.
It uses encoders for sensing, and is should be able to make small and large
movements equally well.
It might be possible to make a mechanism to adapt handwheels to the
trackball, so the axes could be made independant: take out the ball, and
work with the wheels directly.
If the system pointing device is unsuitable for use, maybe a serial input
pointing device could be used only for machine control.
