David,

My mill, which is slightly bigger than yours, came from the factory
with 40 ftlb servos. That's about the right size for your machine to
get decent rapid speeds.

Replacements for my 40 lb DC motors cost around $800 to $1K each
depending on source. My motors are Baldor, SEM makes an exact
replacement for a little less money.

BTW, if your use is beyond hobby type stuff, I suggest buying a
complete retrofit kit instead of the DIY variety. You'll be money
ahead in the long run and won't have as many hassles to deal with.
You'll still have the hassles, just not as many.
