Here is a home made 12x24 gantry plasma cutter on ebay:

Some good photos showing construction details. He has cut
a trailer, trailer hitch, and overhead crane, but he says he fried
one NEMA34 motor, so he is building a bigger one. Seems the
ultimate in simplicity!
