I thought I'd provide some feedback so that anyone else with similar problems can learn from my mistakes!
I tried ferrite cores around AC power leads and plug in noise filters all to no avail.
I then went back to basics and ensured that all of my stepper motors were grounded back to the controller case (as they should have been in the first case!).
Only when I finished soldering the final shield connection did my noise problem and the associated missed steps disappear.
Grounding the motors and shielding the stepper cables has also stopped my controller giving the steppers the full current even when idling.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help - much appreciated !
