Hi Ian,
More than ten years ago, Model Engineer magazine published a design
for an EDM which had a very small stepper driving the electrode through a
screw. It basically drove forward into the workpiece until it sensed a
short, whereupon the stepper was reversed to withdraw the electrode.
I remember there was an improved drive circuit published using a 556
and a stepper driver. As far as I remember, the sensing was done across a
very low value resistor. If there's any interest I'll try to dig it out
and make it available.
Regards,
Philip Mac Cabe.
