Ian,

They would slow it down way to much (at least with standard opto-isolators).
I think it would be a better idea to isolate the digital PWM signal, and
carefully shield the encoder cabling. That will isolate the interface from
the 'power' side of things. I would also use an ISA IDE controller, either
set for a non-standard address or with one of the MB controllers disabled.

I am building a prototype controller inside a metal drive nest module. That
will allow me to get power and ide signals from the machine for the digital
side and provide fan cooling for the controller.
