a digital joystick can still be hooked to the game port
using the button inputs only
with a few hardware/software tricks you can decode the 4 bits
into up to 16 input 'states' for knobs,handwheels or buttons
I collected some examples from the last pendent flurry on the list at

(yea its still missing some content :-)

with a MIDI breakout cable (~15$ from the music store)
you could also expand the pendant with some of the MIDI I/O projects
available online (many use PICs )
midi uses a multi-drop protocol so more than one board can be
daisy chained off the same port
