Hello all
Just installed BDI ver 2.04 on a Dell pentium 400, all went ok after selecting the required display etc,
As A Linux non user, and coming straight from DOS, Windows9xx, the immediate questions that come to mind are.
Which EMC do I use, Generic, Mini, Run, or sim, when using steppers/servo,s
How do I view the entire hard drive contents i,e, (in old DOS
DIR/P), or move in directories so that I know exactly what is there,
How do I move around in Linux i.e. copying files from the A drive etc. to the H/D, and will these be recognisable if they have been created in another simple text editor such as DOS edit,
Are G code programs readily recognised if they have been created in another program.
At present I am poking around in the various icons to see what is there.
Eventuallly I will be driving a Mill with a stepper setup and the Kaluga / Mauch DRO card to close the loop, at present I am using Desknc & DeskncRT but without the closed loop, Hope to try out DeskncRT closed shortley, still building power supply and Geko 210s into a suitable container.
I must stress these are the very first impressions on viewing the linux screen, I think maybee a simple comparator chart in the Handbook of what you did in DOS as to what you do in Linux to the same effect would be of great value to the Newbee,s to Linux,
I don't particularly want to have to spend a lot of time to learn all about every nook and cranny of Linux, but the bare essentials to be able to operate EMC with the shortest possible learning curve would be advantagious to all those wishing to try it out, the rest could come later on.(anyone coming straight into Linux from the BDI, comments appreciated).
Now mooching around in the Various icons etc to see what I can find.
Congrats to Paul and Ray on an excellent CD for the simpletons among us wishing to try out EMC.
(Look out Bill Gates)
Regards
Peter Smith
