From your note, here's my take:

1. The "time is money" equation does not apply because money is scarce
2. The existing control system has been a pain in the butt
3. Elson said that he'd help you make his board work in your system
4. You want a PC style keyboard and G-Code editor at the machine

From that information, your choice seems to be a good one to me.
