When we rebuild power steering boxes for Ford trucks we use a +.001 ball
for every other ball. This keeps things nice and snug and yet turns freely.

This is a tempting thread, but I'll try to stay on the original topic.
I knew nothing about these items when I got my first package
containing about 6 of them. Of course, I just *had* to pull the
retaining thingey out of the middle - I made my first connection
between the term "shagging" and "shag rug" - down on the carpet
getting carpet burns on my knees and elbows.
When I got most of them stuffed back in, it never did move smoothly.
I was told by someone on RCM that the balls come in different
sized and are installed in some kind of SIZE ORDER, to let them
move smoothlyAND reduce free play.
So, I think you may have a "former" ballnut in your collection.
