I think the original WD-40 was for "Water Displacement 40:1".
I do not even remember where I heard that, perhaps from my
Dad (who passed away a few years back).
These days it is simple to request a MSDS (Material Safety
Description Sheet) as it will list the contents.
One product I really liked, but can not recall the name off,
was a heavy duty rust inhibitor. It left a brown waxy film,
but would hold up for YEARS when even left in the weather.
I found the LPS-3 Heavy-Duty rust inhibitor to be similiar
but not quite the same, as the "waxy stuff" would reflow
to cover a scratch.
