I don't think it would be all that difficult, but I wouldn't want to tackle
the design work...or make any suggestions...without know a whole lot more
about machine dimensions, spindle drive, etc.

As for the weight consideration mentioned by Chris, I'd make it as much as
possible from aluminum with possibly some bronze for the sliding bearings.
