non-identical steppers on three axis machine

on 2001-10-22 23:54:22 UTC
Hello:

It sounds like the 'Y' axis motor was described as 'different'. X and Y
mechanical requirements should be identical unless they're rotated 90
degrees (this would have to be some weird kind of machine or a math problem
from a textbook!). One hears about different motors on Z axis due to
different purpose; elevation rather than motion of cutting tools.

Assuming the X and Y motors should be identical, but are not, might be
because the manufacturer happened to run out of one type of motor when yours
was built, and another with similar enough specs was available and was
substituted. It may have been determined to be interchangeable or a second
specified device in the design. Engineers don't like to be hemmed in with
only one source for a component unless uniqueness dictates otherwise.
