I discovered this little trick by accident while learning MasterCAM 8.1 over
at school. all I need to do to avoid crashes is make sure the RA moves for
the tool are set to a point above the highest point of the part (or clamps).

BTW...MasterCAM is a real bitch. I wouldn't recommend it to ANYONE!
