Hi Chris,
As I sent my last message off to you a load more came in which gave me more
of a clue as to what you're trying to do - and I still think you're going
for overkill ;o)
You should be able to get ordinary ball bearings gold plated fairly easily -
look in your local yellow pages for jewellery makers, silversmiths, watch
and antique restorers or cutlers, perhaps even badge makers or car
restorers. All these will use gold platers and should be able to put you on
to someone appropriate. Its best to find one you can actually go and talk
to. The one I use is a 6-man firm who make high class silverware for the
arab market. I never knew they existed until I found them by chance on a
'general interest' visit organised by my local watchmaking society but they
have a small gold plating tank which they use to put gold 'highlights' on
the fancy silver table wares they make. Now if I want anything gilding I
just turn up there and I'm usually told "you know where the tank is - get on
with it"! The last euphonium mouthpiece I made got a final gold plating
there and it cost me a fiver. Such places are well worth finding out and
cultivating.
