That would work, because steppers "generate" strong DC pulses when manually
turned. You can illustrate this to yourself with NO other equipment: Make
sure all-four (or six) wires are separated, and then turn the shaft with your
fingers. Note the "resistance" to turn it. THEN, twist all-four (or six)
wire-ends together, and repeat the spinning. Notice how much HARDER it is to
turn the shaft, now! This, into a 1K resistor, should be at least several
volts per phase!
