Probably he is affected by some sort of virus that went through his
inbox and sent itself to the sender of every message found there,
disguised as a reply.

My unix mail client decided that since I was logged in remotely it
couldn't play the audio file, told me that, and gave up. So I
shrugged, deleted it, and moved on. Just as with every other email
virus I have received over the years.
